Sony KD-55XD9305 (XD93) 55" (2016) vs. Sony KD-49XE9005 (XE90) 49" (2017)

Hi,

I am weighing up buying one of these TVs:

Sony KD-55XD9305 55" (2016 model)
Sony KD-49XE9005 49" (2017 model)

As I understand it they both have:

* X1
* X-Tended Dynamic Range Pro
* 1000Hz

However the XD93 has the Slim Backlight Drive.

The XE90 has a Full Array LED Backlight.

The newer 49" is around £1,500 when it is available, and the 55" is £1,250.

Is the Backlight the main difference? If so, is the Full Array LED Backlight superior to the Slim Backlight drive?

I've Googled around for these answers but can't really make sense of it :question:

Many thanks,

Daniel

Hi there

Without exactly comparing each TV model - I'll leave you to do that.  I would choose the KD-49XE9005 over the KD-55XD9305 (assuming the panel size difference is acceptable to you).

Reasons are:

  • The KD-49XE9005 is FALD.  For a decent explaination of Slim Backlight Drive - see HERE
  • The KD-49XE9005 has the MediaTek MT5891 SOC, where-as the KD-55XD9305 has MT5890 SOC.  So why is this better?  The MT5891 SOC will/should handle YouTube HDR as well as HLG HDR, whereas the MT5890 doesnt - see my post and this thread : HERE.

My opinion is that the XD90 series TV will be a good seller, as it hits a good price point vs technology.

Cheers

Hi Quinnicus. That's exactly the type of response I was after. I.e. the XD93 has some sort of out of date chip, and an inferior backlight system. To me that's easily worth the extra £250 for the newer model. As it happens 49" is exactly the width of my alcove, but I was toying with the idea of the TV extending past the edge, although that would look pretty silly. Will probably just wall mount it with a long bracket and then make up the difference by moving it forward on movie night.

Many thanks.

Daniel
