A317m DVD Playback Problems.

Have a one month old A317m that jerks the entire time when playing DVD's. Movie playback is fine from the HDD ..

is it .. (a) a general issue with these laptops ? (b) a faulty dvd drive or (c) driver issues on the machine ?

Any ideas ?

Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem - although I think this extends to cd playback also (when played via iTunes at least!) - I have hunted hi and lo to no avail. again I have a new A317m.

So you are not the only one - I just cannot find the solution though.:smileycry:

Well, I had the same problem some months ago! I just déinstalled some Sony software & drivers that are integrated with DVD playback software. After that I installed my own DVD software (PowerDVD 6) and it all works fine!

Kenzo, can you remember what it was you uninstalled ? I've removed all of the sony preinstalled software and now i get a copyright error when trying to play any dvd's in Media player ... hahaha.

I can't believe that a shipped laptop with a pre-imaged hard disk could be sent with these DVD problems. Would appreciate a reply if you can as i really don't want to have to rebuild a one month old laptop !!!

Cheers.

The DVD performance problem could be caused by Vaio Zone as well. To check if this is the case, open the task manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del and under the processes tab find "VzFw.exe". If this task seems to be using almost 100% of the CPU on an on/off basis, then this could mess up your DVD playback (but not video playback from HDD because HDD is capable of much faster bitrates). This Vaio utility task seems to monitor MP3s and pictures and stuff on your laptop (particularly for Vaio Zone). So, if your problems started sometime after you added LOTS of MP3s and photos to the library in Vaio Zone, that could be it. My solution was to uninstall Vaio Zone.

Just a theory! But it worked for me.

Oh yeah and I agree with KenZo, PowerDVD6 was much better than the software that came with my Vaio.
