Just bought a Vaio S-model (VPCS12X9E) and Docking Station (VGP-PRS10) for same. I find to my surprise that the laptop has to be open in order to start and use the laptop when docked. My intention was to use external monitor and keyboard when Vaio was positioned in the Docking Station. Don't need two screens on the desk. Checking with the Sony shop, they tell me laptop has to be open when in the Dock!! Funny! Other brands don't need to have laptop open when docked.
Does anyone have a suggestion/solution?

It may be a heat dispersal issue - the Vaio may get too hot with the lid closed.
Can we just be clear what the problem is? Of course you need to open your Vaio to access the Power Button and start it - but can you not close the lid once it has booted? You will, of course have to change the Power Management settings to stop the default action which is to place the Vaio into 'SLEEP' whenever the lid is closed. You need to change the setting to 'Do Nothing' when the lid is closed. Or is there some other problem that the Vaio will not run normally with the lid shut when in the Docking Station?

Blencogo, thanks for your help. I have changed the Power Management to "Do nothing" when the lid is closed and it works fine. By the way, the Power Button is on the side of the laptop, so I don't have to open the lid to switch it on.
Cheers!
