File Sharing Problem

Do you remember when my desktop f*cked up and I spent days trying to recover my docs. Well, that wasn¿t the only thing that¿s messed up¿¿¿¿.

As you know I have got my two computers (my desktop and laptop) that can access each other on the network. Well, kind of. They both see each other on the network and my desktop can access my laptop, no problem.

The only problem is, my laptop can't access my desktop, not because I'm getting some error, but because I'm getting prompted for a password whenever I try to access the desktop on the network!

The strange thing is, it prompts me with a login screen, but it will only allow me to use the guest account on my desktop. First of all, I don't even think you can set a password for the guest account, but other than that, the guest account on my desktop has been turned off.

Whenever I do turn on my guest account, I am prompted with an error message. Saying that I'm not allowed to access that computer because

"Login failure: the user has not been granted the requested login type at this computer."

Any suggestions guys :kissing_heart:

Ok, try this:
Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connections and right click on the properties. And then click on 'Authentication' tab and then uncheck the last option:

1. Authenticate as Guest when user or computer information is unavailable.

See if this makes any difference?

Cheers for the suggestion Akanksha, I did have a look and it's already unchecked :slight_frown:

You know, I spent hours last night trawling the net for ideas/solutions. I found so many people asking the same question on soooo many forums. Loads of suggestions to try different things, which I have, but it just seems nobody actually knows how to resolve it

Anyway I¿ve come to an executive decision. I'm going to downgrade my desktop from XP Pro to XP Home, I know it's drastic but I know that will solve the problem.

So my next question, can this be done easily or do I have to reformat the disk and start again

Probably best, I was thinking of suggestiing a reinstall - But why Home and not Pro.

I guess I am being Nosey[:">] but why do you need the passwords at home?

I don't have any log ons or network passwords on my three computers, so they are not compulsory and apart from not being able to "see" one now and again (reboot usually sorts that out) most of the time they coexist and share my two printers fine.

Sometimes the print server disappears from "Workgroup Computers" but a reboot of the offending computer sorts that out too.

The biggest problem I have is sometimes when I try to access folders/ drives on another computer it says I don't have the required permissions.

Yet another time I can access the samefolders/drives with no problem. I used to spend hours fiddling without success, but now I just reach for the portable hard drive knowing full well that next time it will probably work.

My own opinion is that perhaps networking in XP isn't as stable as they reckon.

Have fun!

Actually I have another idea, did you try the forum/newsgroup on Microsofts website? They are apallingly badly made but if you will get an answer anywhere it will be there.

Akanksha : I'm a niave and inocent man, as if I would know about that!

William: I wouldn't leave things without a password, unless you have no bank details on the PC, or other sensitive info.

Faith: what can I suggest? I'm all out here. Going to XP Home might help, but it would mean reformatting.

TT: That's why i use Thunderbird to read the MS NGs.

But why Home and not Pro¿¿¿¿¿¿..why do you need the passwords at home?
Because I¿d have to by another Pro license, I already have a spare Home one :smileyhappy:¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ haha, because I¿m not the only one in the house and I don¿t trust anyone, not even myself, which is why it¿s all f*cked up

did you try the forum/newsgroup on Microsofts website?
Cheers TT, no I haven¿t but I¿ll give it a go :kissing_heart:

LOL Faith.

Wonder if Microsoft have their own NNTP server?
On PIPEX there's 500+ groups for Microsoft.

NNTP?

Network News Transfer Protocol or something like that TT!

Faith, I assume this is a wireless network for both computers, is WEP/WPA encryption complicating things? Ensure that any wireless network keys are the SAME. Where possible use WPA as it is more secure than WEP.

Also note that XP Home edition does not have the same level of networking that XP Pro has but I am sure this is not a problem for most home networks:smileywink:

Also switch off your mobile phone with a wireless network - it can interfere...

Other than that I have no idea, but I will crawl the web and find answers.:smileykiss:
