GPU vertical lines

I have a Sony Vaio  VGN-AR71M and for some reason vertical lines have started appearing all over the screen even on the BIOS window.

I have done loads of search on the internet and found out that the problem lies in the GPU (Graphics card/Chip).

I have also heard that Sony are aware of the issue and are accepting returns. However I am not sure if my laptop is included in the list.

I have also lost receipts of purchase :slight_frown: Im i left with a faulty laptop? What can I do please, some people recommended paying a reballing process for the graphics chip and some other recommended puting it in the OVEN for reflow, this melts the solder and makes contact with the connections again.

HELP!!!

I also think the laptop is out of warranty :slight_frown:

Hi LatinUnit,

From what you describe it does sound as though you have either a faulty graphics chip or a GPU solder problem. If possible try attaching an external monitor in order to rule out a screen problem.

Unfortunately your machine is certainly out of the one year warranty period, plus this is not one of the models that Sony acknowledge was affected by the faulty Nvidia chip problem.

A re-ball may possibly solve the problem - placing the motherboard in the oven is not to be recommended!

A Google will provide many hits for the re-ball procedure and some repairers will offer a guaranteed repair or no charge (with the exception of carriage).

Have you tried another Monitor??

Try taking out the graphics Card and plugging the Monitor to the Onboard Graphics Port and see if the lines are still visible?? if yes then its an issue with your Monitor.. If not It could be an issue with the Graphics Card. Is your Power supply enough for the Graphics Card..

Have you tried a system Restore?

@KatherineYH
The AR71M is a notebook. Perhaps you would care to give instructions on how to remove the graphics card from this model?
