Hello All
I am very desperate to find out what is going on with my vaio. It is a pcg-fx270(at least that is the best I can tell). I bought it knowing that it wouldnt power up. I took it apart down to the mother board and everything everywhere on the laptop looks like new. I finally took the motherboard out to check it since there were no other obvious problems. I noticed two small spots about half the size of a dime on the motherboard that looked like corrosion or liquid spots. One was an inch or so from the power jack and the other in the area of the battery jacks. I noticed on the black liner under the motherboard that here were two spots that looked like there was a spark from the board. I was positive it was the motherboard so I found a used one and payed quite a bit for it because it was said to be in good working shape. I received it yesterday and immediately put it in the vaio case, put in the cpu, hooked up the fan and then the power switch. I went to turn it on and it the fan turned for about 5 to 10 seconds and shut off. This was more than the last motherboard would do so I thought I was ahead of the game. I figured that since I didnt have any ram in it or the screen hooked up it was shutting down. I installed one chip of like 32 or 64 ram and plugged the screen in. Pushed the button and the lights came on on the bottom of the screen but no picture. It still shut off after a few seconds. I blew under the fan and hit the power button again and it stayed on for maybe 15 seconds. I then hooked up the hard drive and hit the button and it shut off again after a few seconds. I tried blowing under the fan towards the cpu again and it stayed on for 10 to 15 seconds again with no picture and then shut off. The next time I pushed the power button nothing happened. The cpu had been heating up before and the fan turning but now I have absolutely nothing. I took everything back off of it except the fan and tried it and still nothing. I am wondering if there is anyway that I could have fried the motherboard from just running it for the few seconds before it shut itself off?? I have absolutely no idea what is going on with it now and I would really appreciate any input or suggestions that any of you can give me. I am thinking of buying another intel 850 cpu to try in it to see if that makes a difference but I hate to throw good money after bad. If you have any thoughts no matter how slight please let me know!!
Thank you in advance
Something to try. Cooling is paramount. If you think it might be a cooling problem with the cpu shutting down then try this. Get a normal desktop fan (by that I mean the sort you use around the home or office when you get too hot in summer) and aim it at the cpu.
Not the ideal solution, but it does help. I had a failing fan on my northbridge (out of my desktop pc) and kept it cool using an 18" fan!
I have never found a pc to wake up yet without memory in. Normally the pc will bleep at you and just sit there. I am not sure on pentiums, but an amd will only manage seconds before shutting down without adequate cooling.
Not much help I am afraid, but might be worth a try.
Thank you for the suggestion! I was actually able to get the motherboard to start powering up again. It is still only running for a few seconds and then shutting down, but at least it is doing something. I found something out that anyone with a vaio should know. I had tried everything with the new motherboard and couldnt get it to show any signs of life at all so I gave up. Two days later I was messing with my vaio f520 checking to see if there were any parts from the fx 270 that I might use on my f520. I switched out the power/speaker bar. I couldnt get it to work so I put the old one back on my f520 and it still wouldnt power up at all. I thought I broke it to. I got a lil agrivated and slammed the battery into the bay on my f520. I hit the power button and it started right up. I thought I might as well try it on the fx270 board that I thought was dead. As soon as I slammed the battery into it I hit the button and it powered up. It only powered up for about 5 seconds but at least I know it still has life in it. I have decided to try a new cpu and hopefully it will be here 2 days from now. I just recieved a 40g hd for it so I figure if the cpu doesnt fix it I will have alot of good parts up for sale. As of right now with the new hard drive, motherboard, ram, power bar, and screen hooked up when I hit the power button the green light comes on and the fan and the hard drive spin but it doesnt go any further. I am hoping that since there is nothing else not even a beep that it is the cpu. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know!!
Thanks again
