SONY VAIO VGN-S1XP DVD-RW/CD-RW DRIVE PROBLEM...PLZ HELP

Hey,

I have bough sony VGN-S1XP bout 3 months back from UK and i am based in India now. Lately my DVD-rw/CD-rw drive(MATSHITA - UJ812) has got into some problem. It does not read most of the dvd's and cd's and shows them as blank. No matter what disc i put in, its just not reading any disk.

I have tried contacting Indian Customer Service centre but they havnt launched this model in India and do not have skilled technicians to sort the problem with the drive.

Can anyone please tell me what can be the possible solution to this? How can i get this drive sorted out? Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Cheers
Monty

There are cloths you can buy which you gentily rub on the lens.

Make sure you read the instructions carefully, or you'll kill your drive.

well i did not realize but i have already installed the updated firmware. But the problem is still there. It takes a while(bout 3 to 4 minutes!!!!!) to read any DVD and finally explorer window opens up showing it blank.

Also to make it more wierd It reads the CDs but not DVDs.

How can i clean the drive lense? Can anyone please suggest?

I need to sort this terribly....help guys.

cheers
Monty

At least you can open yours, my 1 day old T1XP has a MATSHITA 822Da that will not open under any circumstance.

I am sorry to have to add a line or two to this story. Today my 4 month old S2VP dwd/rw seems to have suffered an early death. I have a UK model and am presently in Japan. I bought a one year world-wide warranty so hopefully the cost of a new drive will be covered. Does anyone know if this means it will be repaired free of charge or if I have to pay for it and then claim it back from Sony?

Is there anything I can do to see if it is simply a minor problem or find out if the drive is in fact dead? The icon for it no longer appears in the my computer page or when I look at the system hardware on the machine (so I can't try to use trouble-shooter program).

When windows is loading it seems to have to bypass the optical drive and the drawer cannot be opened.

Any suggestions welcomed

Usually Sony will send it to a local repair centre in Japan and you won't pay, as you have a valid worldwide warranty.
