Hi Rich.
Here is error code.

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Thanks

Hi Kash,

There is a possibility that Windows has tried to load standard Sigmatel drivers and these will not work with an OEM system – hence the code 31 error.

Try a forced upgrade of the driver.

Unless you have the original XP drivers download the ‘Original Driver Package’ (click Support at the top of this page). Extract the Zip file to a known location e.g. C:\Original drivers.

Open Device Manager and right click the Sigmatel device and select Update Driver.

Select ‘No, not this time', and click Next.

Select ‘Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)’. Click Next.

Select ‘Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install’ Click Next.

Click ‘Have disk’

Browse to the location of the downloaded drivers, open the Audio folder and select Setup.ini.

Hopefully this will install the correct drivers.

I suspect that you have an underlying/intermittent hardware problem but I wish you luck...

Hi,

But its not allowing me to select setup.ini. its only allowing me to selet .inf file which is in the WDM folder called STHDA.INF.

Thanks

Hi Kash,

I have just had a look at the setup.ini file for your model and it doesn’t contain any ‘device instance id’s’ (a list of hardware id’s that the driver supports), whereas the Sthda.ini does. This is why you are only allowed to select the latter .ini file.

I am uncertain as to whether this is the correct .ini to force an install but it will either work or fail so no harm in trying.

However, before doing this can you confirm whether you have actually tried running the Setup.exe from the original drivers package at any stage, or have you just let the driver install wizard do the work? I suggest that Setup.exe would be the first option assuming that you have not already tried this.

Hi Kash,

I am confused as you!

The correct drivers now seem to be installed and you can play audio under the operating system (albeit briefly). Is a reboot required to get sound back?

The only scenarios that I can think of, that would cause the sound to fail after a brief period are:

1 Intermittent hardware problem – at the moment this is looking to be the culprit.

2 Malware – as this is a new install this is probably unlikely.

3 Third party software – are you using media player and have you tried other software?

I’m not sure where we go from here, especially as the problem was evident with both Vista and XP.
