VGN-FE41Z, Fantastic support with GNU/Linux Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

I thought I'd let others know how well Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn 64-bit works on the FE41Z. Installing from the Feisty 64-bit Desktop CD was a breeze.

From Motion-Eye video camera to Bluetooth, everything is well supported. There are issues with suspend/resume (being worked out) and forthcoming support for the blue Fn key .

I have it set to dual-boot with Vista. To do that, in Vista, I went to Control Panel, System, Administration, Disk Management, selected the Vista partition, right-clicked, and then chose to shrink the partition down to about 27GB.

Then I rebooted with the Ubuntu Live CD, created an extended partition in the unallocated space by creating 4 logical partitions (1000MB ext3 /boot, 2048MB swap, 20000MB ext3 /, remainder ext3 /home).

Once I have VMX Virtualisation support enabled on the processors (the BIOS disables it by default - needs hacking) Ubuntu will be able to run the Vista partition as a VMWare guest OS.

You can read more about it here.

Hello IntuitiveNipple,

first thank you for your work indeed!
Are there any advancements on backlight control for newer Nvidia Vaios? This is really driving us Linux Vaio users nuts, there's another thread running on Club Vaio where one official moderator is willing to help contact Sony to get the needed specs:

http://club.vaio.sony.co.uk/clubvaio/en/en/forum/viewthread?thread=54628&lastpage=yes

He is encouraging anyone interested in Linux support to add their voice to that thread to try and move something over at Sony.

My model, VGN-FZ21E, is already in the sony-laptop database but so far no luck with backlight support.

Cheers

I'm running Ubuntu Hardy Heron on a dual boot.

Most things are running OK, it took a few days for the sound system to sort itself out and the webcam works sometimes, other times not.

I have a USB Skypephone (Philips Voip 8010) and it works fine - which I was impressed with as it came with install disks for windows.

There is an issue with excessive Load Cycles while using Ubuntu on some laptops - this can shorten the life of your hard drive - but there are some fixes for it. It's not caused by Ubuntu, it's the Power Management setting in the Bios.

I have to say I love using Linux - and Hardy Heron is very user-friendly.
