VISTA and Networks

Hello All,
Me again!
When I run VISTA, it doesn't see all of the other computers on my network for some reason. I have downloaded Network Magic (which shows you a network map) into VISTA and this does see all the computers. Is there something I should be doing? On my last boot up, the other computers appeared momentarily in Explorer but then they quickly disappeared...

Is there a screen where I can see what workgroups all my computers are in? In Vista it seems that you don't get the helpful Microsoft Networks\Workgroups\etc thing. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

There is a microsoft update for seeing xp computers in network and sharing which must be applied to the XP machines. Will try and find the KB number for you.

The only thing i can suggest with the 3rd party program is to check that you have the same workgroup.

XP Pro and Vista have the workgroup "workgroup" whereas XP home has it set as something different. They have to be the same for you to see them.

Here is the download so that you can see xp computers in the network and sharing map view. (Must be installed on XP computers only) Vista already has it built in.

Thanks Matt I'll take a look but it looks like it might be a firewall thing. I've just turned my firewall off and guess what...up they come, but I'm not sure why, I have at least one of the computers set in the trusted zone but still it doesn't want to work.

BTW the firewall is Norton Internet Security as comes with SONY machines. I guess I need to fiddle with it a bit.

I have Norton Firewall enabled and i can see all my network. For the program that you are using set norton to allow or something like that so it is completly trust and then you will know for sure if it is the firewall as there effecively isn't for that program.

Hope you can understand that terrible sentance!

That's OK Matt,

Strange but true!...Turned the firewall back on and the PC I can see remained visible. Dunno why, but it now seems to work. I wonder if it will remain visible if I reboot?

Now for the next PC...stuck its IP into the trusted zone and....shucks they have both gone again now! Can't figure this out yet!
