I agree Kee-Lo, I think it was to get market share for thier players!

Which I can understand but what I dont get is peoples blind love of MP3 and the fact they cant be bothered to re rip thier CDs to a better more suitable form!

Yep, good idea, everytime a good codec comes to market, go and re-rip your two hundred and something CDs, piece of cake!

Man, re-ripping those CDs take ages, dunno about you, I don't want to do that!

Fair point, at 2mins a CD it does take a while!!

I just use Atrac, Sony do make you use their format but IMO the benefits outweigh the fact that you can only use it on Sony stuff!

btw I don't download, I buy the CD, I guess people with either a ripped MP3 or downloaded collection will have more trouble with Atrac than I do!

I agree, re-ripping takes ages.
MP3 is loved because it was the first, people have ripped LOADS in MP3 and don't wish to re-rip!

You see, I don't think it'll happen, and no, it's not RealNetworks who are to blame, it's Sony. They don't like sharing their code or knowledge with ANYONE, thats why there's only SonicStage to control MD players.

i here what your sayin Kee-lo but if you look at the devices that real player support at the moment it includes 3 sony products, one of which is a minidisc player. They have quite a collection of players supported including ipod, dells mp3 player, even some mp3 mobile phones! If theres enough demand they'll do it....

It is awkward when you have many different formats to choose from, the electronics world is full of varying and non compatible software prgrammes!

When you buy Sony you have to make a choice how much you get tied in! Its almost like a lifestyle choice in a way, I certainly see it sold that way!

I rate Sony very highly, hence my ever growing list of thier products in my house, for me I find although maybe not at the absolute forefront of technology Sony products still stand higher for things like....

Build Quality,
Component quality,
Reliability,
Size,
Batterylife, 'Stamina' is a very good choice of name IMO,
And thier products always look so cool!

Sony is still my favorite, even with all thier idiosyncrasies!!

That for me is what makes it a Sony!!

I love Real One Player.
A long time ago, someone told me that apple don't like to give it's .mov codec to anyone else, but Real One is able to play .mov files now! Real Player is supporting some SONY products! It'd not impossible to even be able (in the future) to play ATRAC files as well! It's the best at the moment.
So if they want to stay the best, they will hear our voice. But when? Who knows ....:smileytired:

lol i was going through my list of music a while ago my man and i was surprised to see that probably about a year ago, i ripped a cd onto my computer. Unaware of anything to do with bitrates and format i just chose the recommened option which was (and i quote) "real audio 8 with ATRAC 3". Now im not gonna read too much into this but if everyone says that Sony likes to keep their technology to themselves then lets hope they still have a soft-spot for real networks !
P.S. I really believe that they will consider supporting the VP as long as sony sell enough units (and we all ask them nicely), i mean they support players that i have never even heard of....!
By the way, whats everyones views on VP sales? do you think they sell many or are we a relative minority?
