Sony VPCCW21FX crashed for the first time tonight while I was editing album information in iTunes. There was no warning. The screen went black. I rebooted only to find myself having to choose "Safe Mode" and Now wonder what I really need to do.

Hi Grechan,
Assuming that you can now boot in normal mode and the crash has not re-occurred I would not worry about it.
If it happens again then examine the Event Viewer log to see whether you can narrow down the cause of the crash.

Thanks Rich, you temporarily dispelled my fears. But it crashed again today. I only switched it on to update my iPod touch. As soon as the sync-update/transfers ended with the beep in the normal way (if you are familiar with the Apple devices you will understand) the computer went blank unexpectedly. I rebooted successfully without a warning that it had not "shutdown properly" so was not prompted to select "safe mode" this time. That was odd.
I did look at the "Event Viewer" this time and I could see an immense Administrative list of warnings and errors but what is a layman to make of all that. Looks quite ominous to me.
If you have read this far I thank you. Racing off to the nearest electronics store to get an external hard drive before I loose the lot.
Kind regards,
Grechan
Hi Grechan,
I’m not familiar with Apple products or the associated software but would suspect that the problem is iPod software/hardware related.
I suggest that you search or post a question on the Apple Support Communities forum.

It’s not unusual to see many warnings and errors in Event Viewer but if you examine events at the time of a crash you may possibly get some information on the cause.
You could also have a look at the Reliability Monitor for further clues – Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Reliability and Performance Monitor > Monitoring Tools > Reliability Monitor.
