WInDVD BD -upgrade wont load
Hi, I have a newly purchased vaio notebook VGN-AR31S. 2 weeks old_but may have been in shop for a while?
it plays standard dvds ok, but when i tried to play a blu-ray movie it just whirred for a bit to spin the disk then stopped -nothing. repeated clicking on the play arrow but same behaviour.
went to vaio update 3, this showed a windvd update -great i thought. so i downloaded this but when i ran the install it started the install shield then said it could not apply the upgrade to this software!
the date on my windvd software is 2006 so i guess the pc was shipped with quite an old version (8.0 DXVA B08.63)and this upgrade wont accept it. how do i get an updated version of windvd BD please?

Hi Irene-plecofan and welcome.
What version of WinDVD BD is Vaio Update trying to install?
Have you tried the update direct from the download page for the AR31S, here -

hi, just for luck i am trying the download again, the intro to that download states ... InterVideo WinDVD BD Update 8.0.8.425_3
This update improves compatibility with BD-J (Blu-ray Disc Java) titles.
Well there is also a message on the suppoer site that suggests there should be a downlaod to dealwith another prblem, from corel regarding security
http://www.intervideo.co.jp/download/updata/info/sny_english.html
quote... This update includes security enhancements as well as updated licensing keys that will be required to view both newly purchased BD titles and those in your existing BD collections.
and points you to go to a link to find the upgrade -which takes you to vaio support but not clear where the the download is other than the one above already found. anybody any clues?

The InterVideo WinDVD BD Update 8.0.8.425_3 is the newest one.
I had the same problem with you, with the same notebook. After downloading the update from the location Blencogo noted above, starting the installation it did also abort the installation with something like "patch doesn't apply..."
However after checking the version in WinDVD BD it seems to have updated, as it shows version ...425; and my Blu-ray discs work again.
Have you ever tried to play a disc after the "failed" update?
Have you also checked the region settings in WinDVD BD, as they need to be setted for both DVD and BD separately?

thanks stone, but the update has not happened. i checked the properties of the exe file and still the same. also tried to play discs no luck. its ok wih ordinary dvd -just wont play my blu-ray.
I tried to register with corel but i have no product registration number as pre-installed software. the site says to find the number in the 'about' under the help , but there is no about shown -possibly cos it is special BD version not standard.

i had exactly the same problem with WINDVD BD. I've got VGN-AR51M. Given up on it already. Got Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra deluxe (7.3)instead, albeit at an extra cost... and works perfectly. Thumbs down intervideo!

There is not much left I can suggest...
I assume you have downloaded the update first and run it later. It's also available from the VAIO-update page as an automatic update, but this does not work. Just follow the procedure indicated from the support pages.
Do you start WinDVD BD before you enter a disc? Try to insert the disc first and let WinDVD autostart.
I have found that it can watch Blu-rays but when I stop the film, take the disc out and want to close WinDVD the program gets stuck and is closed down by VISTA after a while...

thanks Stone, i have tried both entering the dvd and windvd auto loads, also the other way round. it is fine with ordinary dvds.
interesting you comment that it now shows on vaio update as an automatic but wont upload. which is true, but dont understand why that is. I also have it doing the same with a sata drive update. could it be that i have downloaded the sata update and not installed it ? trouble is there is a list of exe files in my update folder and i dont know whic is the sata update to try it again!.
and hey guess -sony support did not phone yesterday -so i will phone them again this afternoon when i get back from shopping.
