Hello @Stuart48,
if your connected bluetooth device has controls on it (play, pause, next song...) you can use them when connected to your NW-A45 player.
I personally often use my WI-1000X headphones with it.
As far as I am concerned you can't connect your smartphone to it to control the playback.
