My phone (Xperia 5) notifications are turned on all times. I am unable to clear it. Doesn't affect the performance but a bit annoying. I have restarted the phone and turned the notifications off and on but nothing happens. Any help would be appreciated.

@Jonas
Thanks for your reply. I understand what you meant now you have explained. Yeah unfortunately I had already tried the method you've just mentioned. I tried clearing the cache within the app and restarting but no change. I then also cleared the data just incase it would make a difference and sent some sms messages from my mothers phone, wifes phone and also a couple of friends to get a few different contacts in my inbox but 3 out of the 5 contacts were showing numbers again instead of contacts names. I also tried a hard reset by holding the power button and volume which also didn't work. I then proceeded to bite the bullet and do a fix through usb to computer using sony pc companion which reinstalls the software and totally wipes the phone so I started again from new but this also has not worked. The only fix is to uninstall the updates for the actual Google sms app. As for the missed call notifications I am really getting extremely annoyed that Google still haven't even bothered to update their phone app to fix this even though they must have known about this for at least a couple of months. I mean I read on one of the Xperia forum s by a Sony representative that Google had confirmed they were going to have it fixed at the latest by I think the 21st of October with an update. It is now the 13th of November and I am ready to throw this piece of rubbish phone in the bin because I am so furious. My badge counter was up to 9 yesterday even though I had no missed calls and I could only clear it when I got home from work so I could call my mobile from my landline and pull down the notification bar and swipe it away. That's the only way to clear it. Now this message s app displaying numbers instead of contacts has really wound me up. I have never ever had trouble with a phone like this and even of I did I would expect it to be fixed within days never mind months. Absolutely ridiculous and disgraceful from Google and it's just as much reflecting on Sony. I appreciate you trying to help me Jonas but Sony have lost a very loyal customer because of this.
Just to let everyone know I've worked out how to remove the missed calls numbers from the phone symbol.
When you get a missed call pull down the notification from the top of the screen and clear it from there.
Thanks for the help.
Why is this marked as solved when obviously neither you or Google managed to solve the problem?
In the meantime, I was able to temporarily solve the issue by installing Sony Phone app (v19.0 worked for me but any older version might work too). After installing Sony Phone app the problem with Google phone app was solved. I tested it and when checkd for missed calls on Sony app, Google notifications disappeared too. And everything seemed to work as expected. But when I disabled Sony app in 'Apps and notifications' the problem with Google app notifications returned.
So, there are two options for Xperia 5 users if you don't want to wait for Google/Android gods to show some mercy and solve this annoying problem:
1 - keep using faulty Google Phone app, while you have both Google and Sony phone app running at the same time, or
2 - simply ditch the Google app and use older Sony app (wich still works fine on my Xperia5.)
@Bigyolk, sorry for the delayed reply.
Sounds very strange with the Messages application but if it is fixed by uninstalling the update, hopefully Google is on the case for this behaviour as well.
I really do wish there was a permanent fix and not having to miss a call/use another phone to call the device and use the notification bar trick to get rid of the annoying number on the icon.
Thanks again for the very detailed information as always and I thank you for your patience!
@78simon, glad to hear that doing it this way worked for you and hopefully a permanent fix will be available soon as it's not very convenient to do it the way you are.
@dinger, the reason for me setting my answer as the solution is because the post contains the latest information and it's easier for users to find the post. I even wrote in the post that this is not really the solution but I'll keep that post updated with the latest information that I have available.
There seems to be a trick to clear the missed call notification by using the notification bar instead of tapping on the application icon and this will then remove the missed calls. This is of course not permanent, but at least it gets rid of the notification and you don't need to switch to the "old" Xperia phone application.
Once again, I'm very sorry for not having more information about a permanent fix.

Very good job right now works for me too...
@Jonas
That's alright mate. Thanks for writing back. I know there is no solution to the missed call notification yet but I'm really struggling to understand how or why it is taking so long for an update to be released to sort this massive problem. Surely Sony must have some kind of idea of when their phones are going to be fixed. This is an absolute nightmare. As soon as I miss my first call of the day then that's it. I cannot clear that stupid badge number until I miss another call and if I don't miss another call I have to wait till I get I from work at night so I can call myself from the landline to clear it. This has honestly been the worst experience I have had with any phone. The fact the problem has been going on this long and still nobody can give any answers as to if it will even be fixed at all or when it will be.
The phone shows 2 missed calls, in fact they are not. How to remove the missed calls icon?
Messages seem to be fixed now but still no word on a fix for the phone app and missed calls.
For me, my friends ! is the best simple and fast solution:
Hi again @Bigyolk!
I'm glad to hear that the Messages application seems to have been fixed at least.
I received some new information today and this is now planned to be fixed in a future update with estimated roll out start date 25th of November. The roll out will continue until early December.
I have updated my original post that is marked as solution with this information and I do really hope that this time, it will really be fixed.
@Suvipoiss, welcome to our forum!
Please have a look at the link below for further information as to when this is planned to be fixed.

@roerisigold, awesome to hear that the clearing it from the notification bar has worked for you.
As I wrote in the reply to the other users, this is planned to be fixed in a future update with estimated roll out start date 25th of November. The roll out will continue until early December.
Until then, you can continue to clear it the way you do, but hopefully it will be fixed permanently in the update!
If someone receives the update next week and it is fixed, please let me know!
Thanks again everyone for your patience and I hope everyone has an awesome day!
