49xe9005 - questions

Hi

I've just bought the 49xe9005 and have a few questions:

- Has the TV been updated to accept HLG as promised in various reviews?

- Do the Netflix & YouTube apps play 4k HDR videos via the internal app?

- Does anyone have any details of preferred picture settings?

Many thanks

Hi @mobilyuk

The answer is yes

Here's some more info for you:

"Your TV should automatically display HDR compatible content. However, when watching HDR content from HDMI devices, you'll have to change the HDMI signal format

Currently, there are number of different mediums that support HDR:

  • Internet Streaming: Apps such as Netflix and Amazon video*
  • 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc Players
  • PS4/PS4 Pro and other consoles"

Hi

Yes - HLG is supported in the 6.2602 update for your model.

Yes  - they play 4K content in the internal apps.

Preferred picture settings really are up to the user, but if you

open up your Youtube app you'll find a few recommendation videos on there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your reply.

Do the apps also play 4K HDR?

Hi again

You're welcome

For Youtube have a look at this example of 4k content:

For Netflix here's some info about Netflix Ultra HD:

"If your device supports Netflix Ultra HD streaming and you have a plan that offers it, you can search Netflix for the terms "4K" or "UltraHD" from that device to find titles available in Ultra HD.

*For TV shows, some earlier seasons may not be available in Ultra HD."

Thanks very much for all your help.

What I am struggling to understand is do the apps play 4k content in HDR? I know they support 4k but unsure about HDR capability?

To see if the TV is playing video in HDR simply go into the Picture Setting pressing the Action Menu. If the content is played in HDR it will show an HDR logo in the top right. You may notice it anyway because when in HDR the interface colors get a bit washed.

And NO, YouTube still doesn't play in HDR in any Bravia with Android TV. Apparently the HDR API is bugged (or not yet fully implemented). We must wait for an Android update, I suppose.

Thanks

It's what I suspected. I presume Netflix also is unable to support HDR?

Hi again

Netflix does :champagne_glass:

In brief:

Netflix HDR 10 - Yes

YouTube VP9 HDR -No

YouTube HDR 10 - Yes

Hope that will set your mind at rest
