Despite trying another Fright Night disk, both Blockbuster rental disks refuse to show anything.
It showed couple of screens that looked like the menu background, and then it looked like the player had switched itself off. Sio I gave it ten minutes to no avail.
I had a look at the disk, but it was very clean with no scratches, so we took it back and got another copy. Exactly the same thing !
The 480 is updated to the latest firmware, and just to be sure, I attempted to reload the firm again to be told "already loaded"
The assistant said nobody else had any trouble with "Fright Night", so it must be the player. However, it played a "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark" bluray perfectly, along with my usual test BD "Avatar - Collector's Edition "

I have a S185 and I'm experiencing the same problems.
At first the screen went blank as it tried loading the disc then the player turned itself off and on and then off again.
I changed the setting 'BD/DVD-Rom 1080/24p output' to off (rather than auto) and tried again, this time the 'Touchstone' logo appeared before it turned itself off.
This is the UK version that I rented from LOVEFILM.

I have the same player and the same Bluray (from Lovefilm) and have the exact same problem. I tried changing the BD/DVD-Rom setting and the exact same thing happened for me.
Is this related to firmware or hardware? This is the 1st bluray I have had problems with, is this just the start?
Cheers

I haven't had my player long, I've tried a total of 5 Blu-Ray discs so far and the only one that didn't work was 'Fright Night'.
The player is linked to the internet so the firmware is up to date.
Judging from the other comments it's only this particular movie.
BTW you sould get on to Lovefilm straight away, I notified them and they 'repaid' the credit without any problem.
I sent an email to the customer service team drawing their attention to this thread and here was the response.

I made sure to mention ALL the models that were experiencing the problem in my email, I can only assume they didn't check it and ignored it completely.

you can bet thats the case!, would also amount as to why they have not bothered with testing the disc themselves, they are either so tight they cant afford one or they were hoping someone would give their disc up to them:smileysilly:

My Reply
I'm not going to lie Richard, but to be honest I find that completely unacceptable. The almost flippant nature you've dealt with this query is nothing short of disregard fro customer service. I paid £100 for the player but had it just been me that was experiencing difficulties I'd understand but the very fact that I've drawn your attention to several other cases should be more of a cause to do something about it.
Have we heard anything else about this at all
Has anyone got any answers on this yet, I have the exact same prob amongst other titles the latest not to play is the new nick cage film trespass........very frustrating a blu ray player that does not play blu ray discs is not much good, Expected more from SONY.
Same problem for me. S185 less than two months old. I gave up on Fright Night. Now The Help won't play. Both Touchstone films. Ridiculous. I have not tried contacting Sony yet. On the evidence of this thread they seem to be acting disgracefully on this matter.
The good thing is that I was about to buy a Sony Vaio Laptop for £877. I now have come to my senses and realise that the Sony name means very little and will be weighing up other cheaper and higher spec options.
I have no problem returning this player for a full refund. It is what you are entitled to when you are sold a product that is not fit for purpose.
I really should have stuck with Panasonic. I will in future.
